Singles of the Week 6/19

‘Meant to Be’ By Brick Nova

Fusing together multiple influential styles including aspects of garage rock, surf pop, and some psychedelia, ‘Meant To Be’ the new single from long standing Philadelphia area band, Brick Nova, is a slow moving easy listen, with both a regular version and a slightly faster radio edit. The vocals of Tom Drakeford have a near lullaby quality to them that remind me of popular indie acts such as Mac Demarco and S. Carey, while the lead guitars from Paul Dallas resemble more of an early 70’s reverberated feel. The lyricism ofMeant To Be’ feels like an intimate reading directly out of someone’s journal as they discuss feeling the “need to run, get far away” and “What’s real is gone, I see your face No fear, I’m not afraid”. The song rolls along, but comes to a strong conclusion at the end with some fun backing vocals to close out the decrescendo of a finish. ‘Meant to Be’ is out now on all streaming platforms, so go check it out!

’Portrait’ By Sharing Contest

‘Portrait’ is the premier single to come out from Alex Fichera (Psychic Agency) and Sam Ansa’s (The Poms, Mother Leeds) newest project, Sharing Contest. With a sound that blends together genres somewhere between indie rock and self designated slowcore, this newest project is an exciting new sound for the talented multi instrumentalists. ‘Portrait;’ which will be on the upcoming anticipated first EP, has dreamy vocals, soft synths, and slow drumming that set the tone for the whole piece. I seek comparisons and for me this reads similar to early Glass Animals or Big Wild circa “Superdream.” So anyone who finds themselves fans of that slower synthy indie will definietly fall in love with this. With somewhat whimiscal and truly poetic lyrics Fichera’s, voice carries the song along as we learn about a relationship filled with yearning and tenderness. ‘Portrait’ is out now on all streaming platforms and be sure to keep your eyes out for the EP coming out in early July.
